Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, photo by Joe Rosenthal, 1945 Bill D. Ross (1921–94) was an author and Marine Corps correspondent during the Second World War. Originally from Iowa, he worked as a news reporter and eventually became a war correspondent assigned to Iwo Jima. His experiences on Iwo Jima and during the rest of the war led Ross to write two widely-acclaimed books, Iwo Jima: Legacy of Valor (1985) and Peleliu: Tragic Triumph (1992). After returning from the War, Ross continued his career as a journalist, eventually authoring his own books. He retired to New Jersey with his wife and died at the age of 73.
